Description

The literal meaning of gua sha is “to scrape sand”, which refers to a light, mottled bruise on the skin after treatment.

Gua sha is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is also found in Ayurvedic treatment. According to TCM principles, your qi (pronounced “chi”) or energy needs to flow throughout your body to feel your best. When qi stops in certain areas, it is believed that health problems can occur. In gua sha, a doctor (often an acupuncturist) gently scrapes areas of your body where there is inflammation or stagnant qi with a smooth-edged tool, improving circulation and promoting healing.

“Gua sha is a very common form of treatment used by most acupuncturists. Its meaning loosely translates as ‘to scratch, rub or push’. Basically, gua sha is just tool-assisted massage”
